Hayden Paniettere, Marcia Gay Harden revisit Knox trial on Lifetime

Premiering Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 - The true story of an American college student accused of killing her overseas roommate could be a Lifetime movie.

And now, it is one.

"Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy" casts Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes") in the title role of the young woman now jailed near Perugia. She is appealing her 25-years-plus sentence -- as is her Italian then-boyfriend, an alleged accomplice -- for the murder of her British flatmate. At this writing, an Italian court had approved a review of DNA evidence; a documentary on the case follows the movie.

Despite the global reporting of Knox's trial while it was ongoing, Panettiere came to the role with a relatively clean slate. "While it was developing, I was on 'Heroes,' " she recalls. "I was working so much, I knew about the story but not in detail. Of course, as soon as I found out I was going to do this movie, I was up to my ears in Amanda Knox videos.

"It is just such a wild story," Panettiere adds. "I spent five weeks filming it and talking about it and debating it. You so desperately want to form an opinion, but we couldn't. One minute, it was, 'She's innocent'; the next, it was, 'She's guilty.' And even if she is guilty, she has convinced herself that she's innocent."

That gave the actress her cue for how to portray Knox. "You saw her so heavily criticized for her demeanor in court and at the police office, but I truly believe her lawyers said to her, 'Don't put on any fronts, just be your bubbly, lively self.' That's what she brought to the courtroom."

Also starring Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden ("Pollock") as Knox's mother, "Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy" was filmed in Rome. Panettiere admits she "was a little concerned about that," given the coverage the case received there.

"I didn't know what the public's reaction would be to me as the person portraying (Knox). I know the story is still huge over there, especially with the new information about her appeal. My last name is Italian and so am I, so I think that helped me a little bit."

Contrary to what one might assume, the term "bikini" did not originate in Paris, Milan, or New York City. In fact, bikinis, even yellow ones, were born in the Marshall Islands. In the summer of 1946, an atomic bomb was dropped on Bikini Atoll, in a test. Bikini Atoll is located in an isolated region of the Pacific Ocean.

The term "bikini" is the only word in Modern English, which originates from the language Marshallese. Soon after the nuclear test, the fashion term bikini had also been integrated into French, and subsequently into English.

Then on July 5, 1946, Louis Reard shocked Paris's fashion world with his newest fashion design. It was a meagre swimsuit that only included four pieces of material, shaped like triangles. Narrow straps held these triangles in place, which had been carefully positioned on the female body.

One might assume that several flamboyant fashion models would be thrilled about unveiling the bikini to Paris's fashion world. In fact, not one could be found. Instead, a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris posed in a yellow piece of the new attire. Like the atomic bomb that had been tested in the Marshall Islands, the industrialized world's interest in bikinis, including the yellow bikini, exploded.

Bombs and Bikinis

The irony of the bikini's name existed in its being a woman's fashion item that commemorated the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, during peacetime. The United States conducted a total of twenty-three nuclear tests there, for over a decade afterwards.

The Bikini Boom

While the term bikini immediately became popular in English, it failed to become a common component of beachwear, until much later. The 1960 hit song "Itsy-Bitsy-Teenie-Weenie-Yellow-Polka-Dot Bikini" helped to promote not only the yellow bikini, but others as well. Also, the 1960s unconventional fashion styles and beach movies helped bikinis, such as the yellow bikini, to increase in popularity.

Tiny Micro Bikini

First up, we’ll run through a short history of the bikini (no sniggering at the back, please) and see how we arrive at the micro bikini.

The two-piece swimsuit we know today as the bikini has only been marketed and sold as such for 60 years. But archaeologists have discovered Minoan wall paintings from 1600 B.C. and Roman mosaics from 300 A.D. that show the bikini, so the ancients were livin’ it up! Still, it is the debut of the modern bikini in 1946 and its later modifications that truly define the swimsuit.

The bikini was invented and launched by two French designers: Jacques Heim and Louis Reard. Heim was a swimsuit designer who had created a two-piece suit to be sold in his beach shop in Cannes. He marketed the swimsuit as the “atome,” (named for its small size and meant to be compared with the atom, the smallest particle of matter known). No doubt, it was an outrageously tiny swimsuit.

The same year, Reard was creating his own similar, two-piece swimsuit. He named and marketed his swimsuit as the bikini, claiming that it was “smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world”. Reard christened his swimsuit the bikini in honor of experimental atomic bombs being detonated in the South Pacific, near the Bikini Reef.

So Reard’s name stuck, though by today’s standards, the bikinis of the 1940s and ’50s were positively modest in their coverage. Bottoms were cut above the navel, and tops fully covered the breasts.

Getting smaller by the year

The bikini went through several changes as time passed. Designers experimented with many varieties for the swimsuit, including a bikini top with attached propellers (!), a suit made entirely of red hair, and even a version made of porcupine quills.

As early as the 1950s, the bikini was already so small that it could be packed into a matchbook, but even more drastic shrinkage lay in store. In the 1970s, the sexual revolution in the United States caused designers to make the bikini even more revealing.

So we had string bikinis, which exposed the navel by fitting the bottoms on the hips. The top, too, provided only bra-style coverage. In the 1980s, the popular thong bikini arrived on the scene. Designers claimed the thong bikini originated from the clothing of Amazonian tribal groups in Brazil. As we know, the thong bikini leaves the bottom virtually uncovered and the back of the suit disappears into the buttocks.

Micro bikinis

In the 1990s and 2000s, designers have continued to revamp the bikini and innovated new styles. While the thong and string bikinis retain their popularity, the micro bikini has recently been added to the growing selection.
Essentially, micro bikinis are bikinis combining a micro bikini top and a thong bikini bottom. Needless to add, it is scantier and more revealing than traditional bikinis and hence its name.

Buying micro bikinis

· A word of warning: you need to be careful that you don’t opt for a string bikini when you mean to buy a micro bikini. There are enough illustrated examples online to show you the difference.

· Numerous sites offer essential advice like how to shave your bikini line (hairy exposures will NOT do). Make sure your pubic area in particular is well shorn.

· Choose the fabric well. Test your skin for itches and allergic rashes, particularly since you will be spending a lot of time in the sun wearing your bikini

· Have plenty of sunscreen handy. You need to use liberal doses all over your body since you obviously will not have much on in terms of protection from the sun’s rays!

This is the most common type of pubic hair removal. It is cheap and effective, if not a bit dangerous. Most women use a razor and if you decide to do the same, remember to use a safety razor designed for bikini line hair removal. Electric razors are more expensive but are less of a hassle to use and a slightly safer.
Most women find shaving a quick and convenient short-term method of bikini line hair management but frequent pubic hair shaving can be both painful and inconvenient. Side effects can include razor bumps/burns and other skin irritations and stubble growth between shaves can lead to itching and ingrown hairs. Not to mention the whole beaver effect.

Bikini Wax
Bikini wax is a good long-term option. As hair is pulled out from the roots, it won't grow back for four to six weeks. Not surprisingly, the treatment can be seriously painful, and many women are reluctant to use this method of pubic hair removal for this very reason. It's worth remembering though that the pain should be less with every treatment as you get used to it. Sometimes this is also referred to as the Brazilian Wax treatment.

Epilators
These are electric devices that when applied to the skin pull hair out by the roots. Hair may not return for up to four weeks so they can be quite a good long-term method of pubic hair removal, similar to waxing. These devices used to be painful to use but current products are reportedly less so as they numb the skin as they work by charging some electric to deaden the pain receptors before the pulling the hairs. Very short hairs can be removed too so stubble and ingrown hairs are less of a problem.

Depilatory Lotions
Please note that the depilatory lotions are strong chemicals that can take as little as ten minutes to dissolve hair. Most are designed for bikini line hair removal but should used with caution. Never use them on the pubic area other than along the bikini line as the chemicals can burn the skin or cause severe allergic reactions. Always carry out a skin test on a small patch of skin before using a depilatory cream. Don't use products designed for removing hair on the face: the pubic area is more sensitive and thus the lotion is less abrasive.

It’s typical pop-rock cheesiness, but in the end, not half bad. The lyrics begin with “So many memories of you and me, like the time we drove to the O.C. …”
